With this online tool, you can replace all or certain letters in the given text with the previous letters of the English alphabet. There's a technical term for the algorithm that replaces letters with the previous letters and it's called the "Caesar cipher". For example, if you have the word "dog", then after decrementing all letters in it by 1 position, you'll get the word "cnf" (the letter "d" of the English alphabet is preceded by the letter "c", the letter "o" is preceded by the letter "n", and the letter "g" is preceded by the letter "f"). By default, all letters are shifted back by one position but if necessary, you can shift them by any number of positions, thereby creating a unique cipher to hide your text. You can decrement either all letters of the given text or just some of them. By default, the option "Decrease All Letters" is activated and it replaces all 26 letters of the English alphabet with the previous ones. There's an additional option that lets you create an exception list of the letters that you want to leave untouched. For example, if you have the text "hello" and the exception list contains the letters "eo", then the decremented text will be "gekko". If you want to reduce only certain letters of the text, then use the option "Decrease Specific Letters". It allows you to manually list the letters that need to be decremented. For example, if you enter the letter "h" of the word "hello" in this option, then the decremented text will be "gello" (since only this letter is modified). If you're working with lowercase letters and uppercase letters separately, then the "Case Sensitive Decrement" option will be useful for you. In this example, we decrease multiple letters in the title of Queen's most famous song. We select the "Decrease All Letters" mode and enter the first five letters of the alphabet "abcde" in the ignore option. As a result, all the letters (except those specified in the ignore option) are replaced by the previous letter of the alphabet.
In this example, we switch to the "Decrease Specific Letters" mode and specify all six vowels (including "y") in the letter-to-decrement option. The vowels are replaced by letters that are 15 positions back in the alphabet and all those letters that reach the first letter of the alphabet ("a") remain equal to that letter (underflow option "Stop at "a"" is true).
This example deciphers a secret message that we found in a mysterious envelope. After some thinking, we noticed that each letter of the message was shifted 8 positions forward in the alphabet. To decode the message, we selected the "Decrease All Letters" option and shifted all letters by 8 positions back.
