With this online tool, you can replace individual words in text with single-digit or multi-digit numbers. For example, you can compress the text by replacing the most commonly used words with the digit "1", then the second most commonly used words with the digit "2", etc. You can also create secret messages by encoding certain words as numbers and then sharing the encoding rules with the person who can read the encoded message. Also, you can replace spelled numbering in text (such as "ten", "twenty", "fifty-five") with digital numbering (such as "10", "20", "55"). All these actions can be performed by writing replacement rules for each specific word in the "Word-to-digit Rules" option. Once you enter the rules, all the matching words in text will immediately get replaced with the specified digits or numbers. For example, if you define a replacement rule "success=1" for the text "success breeds success", then the program will return the output text "1 breeds 1". If you want to make multiple-word substitutions, enter all the substitution rules one by one. By default, the "Replace Whole Words" mode is enabled, which makes sure that only whole words are replaced in the text. If you turn off this mode, then a replacement such as "is=3" will take place in the word "is" and also all words which have a substring "is", such as "this", "island", or "rise". For example, if you have the text "this is risky", then the replacement "is=3" will produce the text "th3 3 r3ky". Additionally, the program provides an option to regulate word matching case. If the "Case Sensitive Words" option is active, then separate rules must be specified for words with uppercase and lowercase letters. For example, "what=5" and "What=6" will be two rules that match the word "what" in the middle of a sentence or the beginning of a sentence. Textabulous!

In this example, a teacher loaded a text fragment from an article describing the differences between cats and dogs and created a word puzzle for her students. She replaced the words "cats" and "dogs" with the digits "1" and "2" and then asked the students to identify the names of animals behind digits "1" and "2". To do this, she entered two separate word replacements in the options (one per line) and made sure that the option "Replace Whole Words" is active.
In this example, we convert numbers written as English text back to mathematical numbers consisting of digits. As only the words "three, four, five, six, seven, eight" are used in the list, we assign a numeric value to each of these words. In the output, we get a list with statistics of the Earth's population over the years.
In this example, we hide the names of covert agents executing a secret spy plan. We assign a unique four-digit code to each agent and update the plan so that no names are present. Now, in case the plan leaks, no one will be able to determine which agent is on which mission.
You can pass input to this tool via ?input query argument and it will automatically compute output. Here's how to type it in your browser's address bar. Click to try!
