With this online tool, you can convert single-digit and multi-digit numbers to letters in any text. The program finds the digits specified in the translation rules and replaces each digit with the specified letter. Common use cases include changing the numeric numbering of a list to an alphabetic numbering, replacing numeric codes and number sequences with alphabetic ones, and also decoding secret text messages where letters have been encoded as digits or numbers. The translation rules can be entered in the options and they have the format "digit=letter". For example, if you enter the text "The cat has 4 paws and 2 ears" as the input and set up the substitutions "4=A" and "2=x" to it, then you'll get the text "The cat has A paws and x ears" as the output. To enable multiple translation rules at the same time, write each rule on a separate line. If you enable the "Convert Lone Digits" option, then only individual digits or full numbers will be translated into letters. For example, if the input text is "The cat has 4 paws, 2 ears, and 12 whiskers", then with this option off, you will get the output text "The cat has A paws, x ears, and 1x whiskers". As you can see, the digit "2" was replaced with "x" in the number "12". If you turn on this option, then the digit "2" in the number "12" will not be replaced, and you'll get the output text "The cat has A paws, B ears, and 12 whiskers". You can also execute a substitution for larger integers and groups of letters. For example "12=C" will replace the integer "12" with "C" and "12=twelve" will replace the integer "12" with the word "twelve". Textabulous!

In this example, we change the numbering of a list to alphabetic numbering. We load a numbered list of the ten best football players of all time in the input, and replace each number from 1 to 10 with the letters "a" (1) to "j" (10). To make surer the digit "1" isn't replaced with "a" in the number "10", we activate the "Convert Lone Digits" option, and this way we the number "10" is correctly replaced with the letter "j" in the output (if the option was off, then "10" would be replaced with "a0").
In the input of this example, we paste a scientific text with several references that link to additional information at the bottom of the text. We replace the digits in square brackets with letters in parenthesis via the three substitution rules "[1]=(a)", "[2]=(b)", "[3]=(b)".
In this example, we're performing an inventory audit in our furniture store. According to the new accounting format, each item now has a six-digit alphabet code instead of a six-digit numeric code. Therefore, we transform the digits 1-9 to capital Latin alphabet letters.
You can pass input to this tool via ?input query argument and it will automatically compute output. Here's how to type it in your browser's address bar. Click to try!
